Wildwood Green

Wildwood Green

Wildwood Green is a housing development built in the 1980’s around a beautiful  around a golf course in old North Raleigh. It is notable because it it a great example of Raleigh homes built in the 80’s.

Wildwood Golf Course has a 55 year history and here are a couple of  clips about how it was:

A clip from a June, 1959 edition of “Golfdom”  column by Herb Graffis:

“…Ralph Lang, pro at Carolina CC, Raleigh, reports that construction has started on his 18-hole Wildwood GC… it’s to be semi-private and was designed by Gene Hamm, who is directing the building…”

In 1959 There was no I-440 Beltline; no Crabtree Valley Mall, and Creedmoor Road was a two lane secondary highway without much on it. Wildwood was in the country.

Here is a 10-26-61 ad in the NC State University newspaper, “The Technician”

“Attention Golfers.. Wildwood Golf Club Offers Special to N.C. State Students… $.75 during week, $2.00 week-ends and holidays. Free clubs furnished by Physical Education Department. Ralph Lang Ronnie (Reitz, I think, who were the pros-rest of this not intelligible)   Route 50 (West?) 5 miles from Durham Highway Tl 3-2303″

Hawtree Drive West of Wildwood Links

The first cross street is Hawtree Drive. Turning to the left, Hawtree parallels the first hole and ends in a cul-de-sac.   The rear of homes on the north side of the road face the golf course (see below). The cul-de-sac lots face the driving range, and the remaining homes back up to Strickland Road or Wildwood Links.

The homes on this part of Hawtree are set close together, and typically have  the garages in front.

Hawtree Drive East of Wildwood Links

Hawtree to the right (east) off Wildwood Links runs with the second hole, and ends  at Gleneagles Drive near the Creedmoor Road entrance. Along Hawtree are Ross Court, Old Tom Way, and Ashdown Court. These are short cul-de-sac roads with some lots facing the second hole.

Gleneagles Drive

Hawtree ends at Gleneagles. To the right is the entrance from Creedmoor Road. From there it is a short drive to the I-540/ Creedmoor Road interchange.

If you turn left, along the left side (west side) of Gleneagles, are homes along the 3rd hole, many backing directly up to it. Looking at the map in the homeowners documents shows that only the homes on the left side of Gleneagles are part of Wildwood Green.

Some of the Gleneagles homes are built in clusters around a common drive, as the one above. Others are on single lots.

Ballybunion Way and the Club Facilities

Continuing down Wildwood Links past Hawtree brings you to Ballybunion Way, which runs along parts of the golf course and housing areas, ending at the club facilities.
