Renovations in Mordecai

Mordecai is an area of Raleigh under redevelopment. It is a sought out area of Raleigh because it combines neighborhood  charm, walkability and somewhat affordable prices.(for downtown). The Mordecai Neighborhood is north of Peace Street and surrounds William Peace University.   It also runs along both sides of Person St., which becomes Wake Forest Road, to just South of the Atlantic Ave. split.

We have grouped selected subdivisions and other features in the Mordecai Neighborhood into three areas:

1.) William Peace University Area

Mordecai Village Subdivision

Capital Park Subdivision

Seaboard commercial area

Pilot Mill offices

Halifax Park

2.) Mordecai Subdivision Area

Schools

The Wake Co. and Raleigh school systems are consolidated. Because this is a high growth area, understanding school assignments is sometimes not that straight forward. Please see the Schools page of this website for more information. You can review the statistics and performance of these schools at ncreportcards.org .

Having said that, a visit to the Wake County Public Schools Website appears to show the following are the base schools for the Mordecai Neighborhood for 2015/2016 and 2016/2017:

Elementary- Conn Elementary. This school is located on 1220 Brookside Drive, Raleigh NC 27604. It is  an active learning and technology magnet elementary and follows a traditional school year calendar. The links show the map of Conn’s base attendance area for 2015/6 and 2016/7

Middle- Daniels Middle.  Traditional School Calendar. The school is located on 2816 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC, 27608. Daniels is a global studies and language immersion magnet school. It follows the traditional school year calendar. The links show the Daniels base attendance area for 2015/2016 . The 2016/2017 map was not functioning the day this was written. Note that on the east side of the area which is the subject of this “Mordecai”  page, the Daniels area is slightly less inclusive than Conn’s. East of  Brookside/Boundary/Watauga appears to be in the Ligon Middle School base attendance area for 2015/2016.

High- Broughton High. Traditional School Calendar. Located at 723 St. Marys St., Raleigh NC 27605. Broughton is a global studies and language immersion magnet, and offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.  Similar to the middle school scenario above, east of  Brookside/Boundary/Watauga appears to be in the Enloe High School base attendance area. Enloe is capped for new attendees, and you will  have to inquire at the school where overflow pupils are currently assigned.

The Wake Co. School System  base attendance area maps are not that easy to read, and when you focus on a particular home, you should enter the address on the assignment page of the Wake County Public Schools website (link above) and verify the base school and its availability. Please make sure to look at the information regarding capped schools and other issues that may be of interest.

See the Inside-the-Beltline page for additional information on Mordecai.

The Mordecai Subdivision Area is set around The Mordecai Historic Park. The Raleigh Parks website offers some information about the structures found there, as does a walk through the grounds:

Mordecai House Ca 1785. Oldest House in Raleigh on its Original Foundation
The home where Andrew Johnson, the 17th US President, was born lies just beyond the garden. The current garden was based on notes describing the original garden left by Ellen Mordecai. St. Mark’s Chapel (1847) and The Badger Iredell Law Office are in the background to the right. The red building is a restroom facility.

Downtown Farming

Please look at the Raleigh City Farm website at the link shown, if for no other reason than to see the engaging renderings of the farm and surrounding area. Raleigh City Farm is a non-profit organization that owns and organizes the farming of the acre of land shown. It is at the corner of Blount and Franklin. Its mission, as described on the site, is to engage people, demonstrate sustainable local farming, and catalyze its furtherance. There is a blog with recipes and comments related to the farm.

Oakdale at Mordecai

603 Sasser Street, Oakdale

603 Sasser is the model home for Oakdale at Mordecai. It opened the first weekend  of April, 2016. The base price of homes in Oakdale will be from $500,000 to $630,000. Options and upgrades can bring the price into the $700,000s . These homes will range from 2300 to 3000 square feet.

Ultimately, the Oakdale project will have from 54 to 58 new homes depending on the ultimate lot yield. The chance to live in a new Inside-the-Beltline project with enough lots to give it a sense of community does not come along that often.

The builder is Robuck Homes. They have been in business in Raleigh since the 1920s and are well regarded builders and developers.
